I am sitting up in my hospital bed with my MacBook Pro. Harborview has the UW WiFi network. I have access by virtue of being an alumnus. Anita brought my laptop to me tonight to make feel "normal.”
Last night, I left Bellevue at 7pm on my bicycle under clear skies and crisp cold temperature. It was one of those wonderful commutes home. While it was dark, I had my usual compliment of front and rear lights.
It was cold, but I stayed warm under my long-sleeve wool t-shirt, bib shorts, tights, wool socks, wool glove liners, bicycle gloves and long-sleeve yellow jersey. Every pedal stroke/revolution of the crank brought warmth into my core. I was very happy.
I enjoy riding during autumn: the colors, the scents, the “rice crispy” crackle of orange and red maple leaves underneath my spinning wheels.
I am nearly home. A mile from home, I hit a pot-hole and puncture my front tire. I replace the tube, but have difficulty getting the tire bead to hold to the rim. On the third try, it holds. I mount my bicycle, ride another two blocks and a car passes to my left. I hear gun-like shots and immediately feel pain in my chest. I ride a short distance and stop. I hunch over my handlebars while I “absorb” the pain. Every inhalation brings a sharp pain to my left lung, as if I had a broken rib. I look at my “clean” yellow jersey. As there are no marks, I suppose that the assailants shot me with an air gun or some sort of blunt projectile.
I am angry at them. But, they are long gone.
I continue home. The damage doesn’t inhibit my pedaling, just causes extreme discomfort.
Once home, I store my bicycle and enter our home. I am in pain, but settle into my routine. I greet Anita and go upstairs to shower. I remove my yellow jersey and notice a blood stain and two small holes on the rear side of my left side. I remove my wool t-shirt and bib shorts and notice the same damage. I turn my body and look in the mirror to see two holes in my body.
Not wanting to alarm the children, I go to the stairway and ask Emma to send her mother upstairs. I explain and show the wound to her. I guess we are both in a bit of shock and respond in our normal ways. She has seen blood on my cycling clothing before from many falls. She rinses out the blood and takes them downstairs to start the laundry. I take my shower.
Anita applies two bandages and hands a slip of paper to me with the non-emergency phone number for the police. I call the number, go through a couple menu items to reach a live person. After explaining the nature of assault and injury, the lady dispatches the police and medics to our home.
I go downstairs to alert the children. Even the appearance of a relatively healthy parent does not calm the shock of having one’s family member violated by some form of gun shot.
The firemen arrive first. They ask lots of questions. I will tire of hearing and responding to the same questions over and over and over. The firemen feed information back to their central support team. They contemplate sending me to the hospital with the medics or with Anita. The medics arrive. Finding neither exit wounds nor the intruders near the surface, they are going to take me to Harborview.
Lying on a back board on top of a stretcher, with a neck brace and an oxygen mask, I cannot see much but for the heads of many caregivers. After a chest x-ray, we learn that I have two b-bs inside me; but, where exactly? After a CT scan, we understood.
Both entered my flesh, leaving near parallel debris fields. One penetrated my left lung, leaving a small hole that released some air into my chest cavity. I have a small pneumothorax. It remains in the bottom of my lung. The other touched my aorta and slid down to my diaphragm. The doctor tells Anita and I that I am very lucky. The damage could have been much worse. My left lung could have collapsed. The aorta or spinal cord could have been hit. The doctor tells me that if the b-bs posed any danger, they would operate to remove them. He recommends leaving them.
He most concerned with my pneumothorax. He has the hospital admit me. He wants me to spend the night for another chest x-ray in the morning.
My case attracts a lot attention from various, interns, nurses, students and other caregivers. They scroll the CT scan pictures to view the damage.
I have some pain, but nothing that I cannot deal with (without pain medication).
Our neighbors spoke with the police after I departed to the hospital. The police officer believes that the assailant used a 22 handgun loaded with b-bs. It is apparantly becoming more common. They also mentioned that usually that b-bs shot from a b-b gun remain near the surface.
Life is a journey of learnings.
I have “long” lungs. Apparently, cyclists and runners develop lungs that are longer than most people. This means that I need two chest x-rays as the first picture never capture all of my lungs.
I have a wonderful family and friends!!!
I still really love riding my bicycle.

Peter-so happy you are OK. So much less can be said for who did this. Sadly this country treats these egregious actions as far less serious than they really are. Wishing both that you heal and we find these people. Having had a glass bottle hit me last year while riding makes me more furious about what has happened to you.
Good luck on your recovery Peter. How far do we have to go to catch these outrageous idiots? A digital camera mount with a chest strap next?
sorry to hear your story. Best of luck on a quick recovery.
Sorry to hear this happened to you! I do hope they are caught. I have had things thrown at me but never shot. A wish you a speedy recovery and best wishes. Keep on riding!

Hi Peter! As usual your unsinkable spirit is absolutely inspiring. I think it is safe to say many others are feeling the anger and outrage you seem so able to put behind you. I am so thankful you are okay. Our thoughts are with you, Anita, Ian, and Emma. Get well soon. Amy & Robin
Holy! Spread the word about this - not only do cyclists need to know that these people are out there, the idiots who did it need to know that shooting bb's at someone isn't fun and games - it could be lethal!
I'm certainly glad to hear you are OK, best of luck on your recovery.
Peter - As others have stated we are outraged and can only hope that you make a full recovery. We'll be cheering for you. Any chance of catching the perps? Are the police doing anything on your behalf? Please take care.
Heal up buddy! You are a true inspiration. I know you'll always remember that there are way more good folks than SOBs but dammit, we've got to watch out for those SOBs. Ride safe.
Wow Peter, what an awful incident. I hope they catch those idiots. I am very impressed with how calm you stayed. Wishing you our best and a speedy recovery!

Peter,
Not much to say beyond what has already been expressed here. Thank you for sharing what happened. I am very sorry to hear that this happened to you and I wish you a fast recovery.

Sorry to hear of your gunshot wounds, very glad they luckily were not more dangerous. Having had some minor hassles from drivers, (driving too close, yelling, honking), I've been making an effort lately to glance at cars going past, training myself to remember the license plate numbers. I hope this doesn't spoil your bicycling too much, once you're ready to ride again. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
A bicycle commuter from the right coast wishes you the best. The stupidity of actions like this are deeply, deeply sad.
Peter, I know the value of good friends that stop by the hospital when you are injured. Here is hoping to see your happy face doing the things you love so much. And riding with the people that care about you.
I'm glad to read you'll still enjoy bicycling after this. You must be a dedicated cyclist. Good luck.
Oh Peter, Peter. It's quite a relief to know you're OK. It's quite distressing to know you were shot, especially so close to home.
To paraphrase Robin Williams in World According to Garp, "The chances of being shot again are astronomical. You're pre-disastered." Enjoy the many years of safe, wonderful rides ahead.
I'll see you, or your taillights next spring.
Wow, indeed a bizarre experience, Peter! I'm grateful to hear that you are recovering well--physically and emotionally. I wonder how it'll affect your next trip through airport security? :)
Sending you lots of healing energy and warm wishes.
Hugs,
Lola Jacobsen
Peter
It was good seeing you in France this year. As a fellow cyclist I feel both outraged and more vulnerable. Haven't heard of this sort of thing in Central Oregon yet. Come on down and ride here. (Except it is getting cold now) Wish you a speedy recovery
Like others, I'm glad to hear you will be okay, or so it sounds. This sort of things is not just stupid, but it is insane. I have to wonder why there is no mention of it in the newspaper, the PI, at least the online version. Good luck with your recover.
From across the great divide of the Cascade Curtain,
Don't know you, Peter, and probably won't ever have the opportunity to meet you or ride with you. But here's to you, friend! Glad to know that there are people like you around.
Peter,
Glad you're relatively ok and hope that you heal quickly and completely. Glad you still want to ride. Hope they catch the creeps.
Peter:
I’m quite sure I couldn’t be as optimistic or calm as you in this situation. In fact, here at arms length my underlying reaction is rage. The vigilante in me wants immediate ‘justice’ (actually retribution).
Reading your post helps me realize that there are much better ways to deal with the acts of stupid people. I’ll try to be more like you … (but if I could get my hands on those perps for just 5 minutes… oh, must not think these thoughts!)
Heal well and fast, you are an inspiration!

Just know that there are fellow bicycle commuters out there who are wishing you the best.
Hope you have a speedy recovery, Peter!

Best wishes on a speedy recovery. We can just hope that the kids who did this come to their senses before someone gets killed.
Never yet shot. So sorry to hear of yours. So close to the unthinkable, tragic, senselessly stupid. Sure, it happens everywhere as almost daily someone in a huge chunk of metal swerves and honks or screams at me (My favorite is "pedal that bicycle"). In the South we have some special treats occasionally on our rides, like a cup of Copenhagen spit across our jersey. Once, when as I left a state park a gentleman(?) pulled to the shoulder ahead of where I was riding and crept along as his childern in the bed of his pick-up pelted me with roasted hotdogs. You mend up soon.
What are we to do with such situations?
Have you thought of getting this story into the local press and media, raising the probability that someone who knows the perpetrators might turn them in? Of course there would likely be backlash from that action. Sad to say, probably not worth the effort.

Peter, Glad that you're going to be OK. As a fellow Seattle commuter, I really hope they find these guys and throw the book at them. We have lots of riders in this area and could help keep a lookout if you can give any details about them or their car.
Get well soon. See you back on the road!
Very sorry to hear about this. We have just posted about it so more West Seattleites will know and will be on the lookout for the culprits. We'll watch your site for any follow-ups.
A little over 20 years ago, I was shot in the leg with a pellet while walking home from work in Portland. Completely unprovoked -- just walking down the sidewalk at night thinking, when a truck passed. My wool coat ended up with a hole in it, and I had a dollar-sized raised bruise on my leg -- but nothing approaching the severity of your injuries.
Here's hoping this isn't some new trend, but just a freak incident. The fact that this happened to you at all makes me worry, but the fact that your response is positive and non-vindictive gives me hope. Wishing you a fast recovery and quick return to the bike.
Peter, you are incredibly level-headed. I wish I had your perspective. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. My wife & I both bike commute from West Seattle, and we hope to see you out on the road.
Very sorry to hear this happened and wish you a speedy recovery.
I wish someone noticed this insidious action and will forward important info to the appropriate authorities. It's unacceptable to just ignore this. Whatever is done to another person can be done to anyone else. There will be a next time if the one's responsible aren't caught.
Peter -- thanks for sharing your story. As a fellow Seattle bicycle commuter, I'm both outraged and numb hearing your story. You and your family are in my thoughts. Take care of yourself in the days and weeks ahead, this is the kind of thing that can hit you in a couple of weeks when you're least expecting to be bothered by it.
Glad you got attention quick.
All the best to recover quick too.
Your blog entry is amazingly calmly written - what a sign of your character, Peter. All the best.
Glad to hear you are relatively OK, Peter and thanks for your calm and level-headed account. I am sorry this happened to you.
Get well soon and Mary G. and I hope to see you next June at the C1200.

Greetings from Whidbey Island.
They're not shooting at us (yet) up here.
Get well Peter!
Keep Riding!
I am happy to hear you will recover. You are a tough bird. Of course you'll get right back on the horse that throwed you. Let us hope those cowardly perps get their just rewards.
Jesus Christ! How do you people live in the US with crap like that? Get well soon. Me, since Bush got elected the first time, I have refused to ever cross my southern border, no matter what you next elect in your 'republic'. You country is "red in tooth an claw".
Peter,
I'm terribly sorry to hear about your incident. Unfortunately, this type of thing isn't that uncommon. A friend was riding through Fraternity row in the U-district and some fool threw a pipe bomb at him. His knee was destroyed and he now can ride his bike and snowboard only due to the incredible doctors at UW and components from a cadaver. He'll likely need to have that replaced withing the next 5 years. This happened in 2002.
I am so glad to hear that your spirit was not diminished and you are safe. I wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to riding with you soon.
Dan Boxer
Peter,
We have never met, probably never will. Yet, I am kindred to you. I am a cyclist. I ride in my city, in traffic, and the open road, like you.
I was so touched by your last statement: "I still love riding my bicycle." That's the spirit! Hoping for a rapid recovery, and a ride again soon.

These stories are becoming way to common in all parts of this country. These stories need to become more widely reported so people understand the damage that is caused.
My best wishes to you and your family along with prayers for a speedy recovery.
Hi Peter - I hope you are feeling better and back on the bike very soon.
Best wishes,

When I lived in Pittsburgh I got shot by people driving by with BB guns. Luckily they didn't penetrate the skin. I hope you recover quickly Peter and it doesn't discourage you from biking. It definitely sucks that things like this happen.
My best wishes for you and my worst wishes for them. It is too bad that they won't be caught. Have you contacted the news? This is something that should be brought to peoples attention.
Simply horrible. Get well soon, Peter, and stay on that bike.
Peter -
Great to see you today with your PMA (positive mental attitude) completely intact. Take good care; we'll be riding together soon. Another beautiful day - and we'll be on our bikes. Illegitimi non carborundum. Not that they'd have a chance.
Best wishes on a quick recovery.
I wish (future) peace and a speedy recovery to you, sir.

Unbelievable, Peter. I know Rick (he's in Phoenix for a ride this weekend) will join in the gamut of emotions that are running through me right now, disbelief, anger, frustration that we can't somehow learn to all live together in peace on this planet... but foremost I am so thankful you are going to be OK. See you soon.
Bonne chance mon ami! Hope you feel better soon and back on the saddle.

Thanks for your great spirit, Peter! It may not seem so now, but your example of courage will make it easier and safer for others to ride w/o fear in the future.

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. I read an introduction to your story over on Kent's Bike Blog and had to come over and read the whole thing here. Unbelievable. Just because people can own a gun doesn't mean they should sometimes.
Justice to the evildoers!
Hey Peter,
I do the same commute up delridge,
PM me when you're back riding.
We can pace line, I'll take the rear.
So far I have been very lucky on Delridge, my experience for the past two years has been that Delridge drivers are exceedingly polite.
It is very depressing to have heard this has happened.
We need to come down hard on the west precinct to keep an eye out andd let the word go down that this is way acceptable.
In fremont last week I had a truck intentionally sideswipe me and try to push me into a curb.
I think motorists just rerally know in their heart that cyclists are doing the thing that all humans should be doing, and in typical jungian projection they villianize us.
See you when we are riding.
Heal quickly! Your story was amazing that you made it out in one piece! Best regards.
Peter:
There are already enough obstacles & risks we encounter bike commuting without having to worry about shrapnel; you're one tough randonneur - best wishes for a speedy & complete recovery.
Peter,
Upon reading what happened to you at the PI website, I quickly went over to your blog to read your account of what happened. As a fellow Seattle bike commuter, I am both shocked and saddened by what happened. With that said, I am also amazed by your seemingly serene approach to what's transpired. I can completely identify with you on those days and nights that are just made for a bike ride. On a recent ride home from work early one morning, I witnessed a beautiful sunrise, a full moon, and steam rising off Lake Union. It was one of those blissful moments where everything seemed right and I thought, "Ah! This is why I love riding my bike!"
Hope you get well soon and return to the roads and trails with the rest of us.

Peter, glad to hear you're doing well after such a misfortune. I'm probably the 100th person to respond but I'm a fellow Seattle cycle commuter and I wish you the best.
I'm in Shanghai on business right now and I'm sure you'd love to see the cyclists here. There's an entire lane on every street just for bikes and scooters!
Get well soon, and I hope to see you out on a bike soon!

Hello Peter - Fellow West Seattle bicycle commuter here - So happy to hear you are okay and looking forward to seeing you back on Delridge in a couple of days.
Wow! You really kept your cool! Glad to hear your recovery is going well. We endure the usual bike-car indignities on Delridge as well, but we've been very very fortunate.
I'm not so charitable as most, however; it's my fervent wish that perpetrators like that, bored stunters with a car and a gun, be removed permanently from the gene pool.
Tailwinds!
Hi Peter,
I saw you on the news this morning where I learned of your incident. On behalf of the Cascade Bicycle Club I'd like to say how relieved we are that you are O.K. and impressed that you back on the road as a bicycle commuter.

Peter,
I am praying for swift recovery for you and a short delay in returning to your bicycle.
Sending you good thoughts all the way from Los Angeles for a speedy and thorough recovery. And sending the assailant(s) thoughts of what they deserve.
Oh my gosh,I cannot believe this happened to you!!! I saw everything on the news last night and called up Dad and Polly to let them know what happened. I am so glad that you are okay and in good hands! Your cousin Matthew.
I don't know you, and I doubt we'll ever meet, but I hope your recovery is as quick as your cycling. Or perhaps you'd like it to be a little quicker? Whichever, get well soon :)
Unbelievable. Other than the fact that it actually happened, of course.
What the hell are people thinking when they do random acts of senseless violence like this? People aren't target practice.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Keep on Mr. McKay, with your health, writing and cycling. As for me, I would have lost it at the flat tire in the dark. Yet, you minded your own business, par the commute home. You are an inspiration.
That scum will learn their actions are wrong. Not in a timely manner, but eventually, and they will pay with their conscience, affecting their self and those near them. Perhaps more profoundly because this particular scum gained zero satisfaction from any drama or youtube material.

From one cyclist to another, heal quickly and may karma rise up to bite those guys on the ass.
I like to envision these people having their drivers licenses revoked and being sentenced to a couple years of bike commuting.

We all should start riding
with those mini -smart card- video camera's .
People will soon know that everything that happens to a cyclist will be on tape.
I wish you a speedy recovery, Peter.
I hope no-one else has to go through this befor people all over the country realise something has to be done to make it safe for cyclists.

I'm so glad to hear that you plan to keep riding. It's the way, as cyclists, that we'll keep making the roads safer - more cyclists out there! As for the jack donkeys who did this, I don't hold out much hope that they will be caught, but hopefully the publicizing of this incident may get back to them - scare them straight - this was not a childish prank - punching holes in lungs and hearts - deadly. Keep you good attitude and know these incidents are still rare - I just got back from pedaling the entire family across Canada unscathed. Fun to learn about our LONG lungs.
Cheers,

Sorry to hear about what happened, I hope you are healed up and back on the road soon
Peter - We were shocked to read about this. You have our deepest, best wishes for a speedy recovery. Your attitude is an inspiration.
Peter, I'm so glad that you are okay. Having been shot myself on a ride, although nowhere near as severe (a rubber pellet that bounced off), I know what a shock it is to realize what some people do for kicks. Fortunately they are a very small minority. Keep on riding!
Sorry something that had to happen but I guess it's better to an optimistic person versus a pessmist. Keep your chin up.
Peter
So sorry to hear of this attack. As a daily, year round Washington cyclist I'm horrified by this. Hell, as a human being I'm appalled by this. I'm hoping that you'll recover fully soon and don't stop riding. Best wishes to you and your family.
there were paintgun attacks on two pedestrians downtown last month. could be same person.
Don't know how much this will help, but I used to commute up and down Delridge every day for 6 months or so, and I noticed that about once a week, someone would have gone through and shot out a bunch of windows in parked cars. Sometimes driving along I would count as much as 25. After a few days, they would mostly be taped up or fixed, but then it would happen all over again. Looks like it's someone hobby to cruise up and down Delridge shooting out windows. If the police could catch whoever does that, you would probably have your man.... Peace
I just wanted to echo what everyone's already said. Thank you for sharing the story and for your optimism. It'll make tomorrow's morning ride that much more enjoyable :)

...my best to you, peter...glad the mckay family didn't lose their #1 favorite cyclist...
...the idiots responsible, while out having their "fun", aren't smart enough to realize this could have been a homicide...
So glad to hear this won't keep you off your bike--you're very brave! Hope you get better soon, and that those thugs are brought to justice.
To have such a terrifying thing happen to you and still resolve to get back on the bicycle is truly and inspiration.
Thank you for sharing.
Hello Peter
I am sorry to learn this bad news about your accident. I hope you will recover quickly without damages.
I remember well the brake levers you sent me eight years ago and I am still using them! Thank you again.
It is a pity because we don't meet us during PBP, perhaps because you ride too fast for our tandem or we are too slow ! Anyway, congratulations for your PBP.
Take care and best wishes

As a fellow bicycle commuter, best wishes on a full recovery...the good spirit you present in your blog is wonderful. Your description of an autumn ride is perfect.
Your good spirits are an inspiration, but at the same time, I can't help but be infuriated by the blatant inhumanity displayed by the shooter. I ride this same stretch down Delridge on my commute, and it scares the crap out of me, even without hearing of your experience. I'm sorry this happened to you, and I wish you a quick recovery!
Peter,
When I read this late on Fri night, I was too angry and upset to even leave a comment. My thoughts were with you as I pedalled this weekend listening to the “rice crispy” crackle of orange and red maple leaves underneath spinning wheels. You were my inspiration! We are all so incredibly thankful, you'll be out there hearing those delightful sounds soon. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We had a guy here in Tucson shooting people with a paintball gun. He hit about half a dozen people on a single day. I think we are actually getting closer to nailing the guy though.

Found your story through drunkcyclist.com -- Holy #^* !!! man.... that is pretty scary stuff. Your victory = Your continued riding...
I wish you a speedy recovery and hope these morons will get some sort of punishment.
A fellow rider from the tristate area (east coast).
Get better soon man.
Add me to your list of best wishers. It can be quite an adventure, this bike commuting.
Our families seem to take these things a lot harder than us don't they.
Speedy recovery to you, and get that tire checked out.
Good to hear you're going to be OK. Sadly, this type of thoughtlessa and harmful behavior is all too common. I was a victim of "biker ball" a few years back. A trio of upper-middle-class kids was driving around and striking bike commuters from behind with a metal baseball bat. For those that proceded to fall, the thugs would then beat and/or rob the victims. I managed to stay on my bike and chase the cowards. My descrition led in part to their ultimate apprehension! Cheers and be safe! B-rad the hostile local...
Over a hundred people have posted before me, but I am a bike commuter as well.
Good to hear that you will be recovering quickly.

Thoughts and prayers with you during your recovery. What a terrible thing that these people have done. A real tear in the social fabric.

We are thinking of you in Portland, OR.
Pete,
So sorry to hear about this. Good luck and glad to know you are on the mend.

Hi Peter!
This is shocking. I commute to work by bike almost every day, bike on weekends as well. Have been honked and yelled at - for no good reason - but never had anything like this happen to me. What a sad world!
All the best.
Markus
I'm so sorry to hear this -- and so glad that you are all right. I also commute via bicycle almost every day, and a fellow cyclist told me about this this morning. Sad. Scary. Infuriating. And grateful that it wasn't worse. I hope your wife and children are okay -- you're in my thoughts.
ghd3, Seattle, WA
Dang dude! Sucks that someone would do that. Glad you're okay. Sounds like you handled it well. Here's to a strong recovery!
Damn...and I thought getting beer cans and oranges tossed at me was as far as these asses would go. Best of luck on the recovery. Hope you've been able to recall some innate detail that helps catch these folks.
So glad you are one of the lucky ones! It is time to take MORE action for our cycling rights, to be on the roads. I sure hope those idiots are caught and prosecuted.
Peter, so glad you are ok. You are handling this with incredible dignity. My thoughts go out to your kids. I will try to keep my anger in check.---Patty Lyman
I hope you're in great condition again soon + that this doesn't happen to anyone else. Take care :)
Hello Peter,
You're attitude and spirit is one I aspire adopt. If that happened to me I would be enraged
and want revenge, but that's how wars get started. I once knocked off the side view mirror of Saturn that ran me
into a curb. The mirror was just hanging by it's wires (it was a power mirror). I
kept on riding expecting the guy to come after me. I realized after that
incident, my actions potentially turned someone against cyclists. I am ashamed
of that and for losing my temper. I am very sorry this happened to you and wish you a speedy recovery.

Holy shit, Peter. That is unbelievable! Glad you are OK! and you have such a great attitude, family, and friends!
Get well soon, friend. I am horrified at what some people will do...
Good luck.
Dear Peter,
What a terrible ordeal for both you and your family.Indeed what is the world coming to,that one can be attacked in such a manner?
I sincerely hope that the perpetraters are caught and you will be back in the saddle asap.
All the very best for the future

As a fellow bike commuter I must say that I am truly inspired by your experiences and the way you handled yourself. Thank you for sharing with us. Best of luck to you in your daily rides.
We live in a crazy world. Hope you get well soon. Take care.
OMGosh! That is horrible that someone shot you!!
I'm glad you are getting taken care of. Best of luck on your recovery!
Wow…what is wrong with people?? That was a very painful story to read. Wish you a very fast recovery!!
Here is to a speedy recovery. I've had a knife thrown at me and many an old soda cup and beer can, but thankfully never shot at. It's really a shame someone would threaten someones life just because they choose to ride their bike home.
Peter I am so glad that you are Ok, it could have been much worse. Being a regular rider myself, I have to say that I am very outraged by their senseless action. Whoever did this needs to be caught and punished. Your story should be in the media, people need to be informed about these things. I wish you the best Peter!
Thank you for sharing your story, Peter.
It was passed along to our high school staff by a colleague/rider who's been shot at by paint ballers.
Such guns were a recent issue at our school as an "important" football player's feet were not held to the fire and expelled for bringing such weapons to school and to a game.
I've lived in other parts of the country where beer bottles, insults, and spit were normal facts of cycling life, but I always thought northwesterners were were better than that. I hope you have a speedy recovery and are back out on the road soon. As far as Karma goes, those morons will get their fair share. Take care and good luck.
Peter, I wish you a speedy recovery. I am new into the bike scene and absolutely love it. I have yet to experience the objects being flung at me, cursing, or road hogs. I hope I never do, but as my mileage adds up, my turn is coming. I hope I am as gracious as you. God Bless.
Sorry to hear someone actually shot you, that's really scary; so glad to hear you're ok.
I rode my bike home from work tonight; I hate to acknowledge the fact that someone could poke a gun out the window of a passing vechile and shoot me; your story hit me like a ton of bricks.
Hope you heal up quick; best of luck.
Hello, I hope that someone in the area will alert the media. A news story is needed for this or the only people who know about it will be cyclists. Good luck to you.
Peter,
I am glad you are recovering. Thanks for sharing your experience with other riders; I condemn the coward actions of your aggressors, and hope that there will be justice.
Wow, this is horrible. I'm glad things weren't worse, and I admire your spirit.
Hey Peter,
Cheers to you for a great attitude.
I've had drivers try to block/run me off the road on Delridge.
21rst and 16th offer less traffic and less aggressive drivers.
There is a great bike map at http://www.cityofseattle.net/transportation/bikemaps/southbikemap.pdf
Wow, dude, that sucks. Glad to hear that you're okay.
You showed great presence of mind to not alarm your children.
I hope those bastards get what's coming to them (the shooters, not your kids).
I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. Sounds like we're neighbors, as this happened essentially in front of our house. We actually heard the shot, and as I tend to do I went to the window to see what I could see, and was not able to see a car of any sort. We look out onto the side street, so it's hard to see anything useful. However, I can tell you that there was only ONE shot fired, and it was extraordinarly loud. Not like the usual 9mm shots we hear occasionally.
If you want to contact me or feel I could be of any help, I'm at gmail with user name of aimgrrrl.
This has been happening to homeless people here in Dallas but with one major difference, the (bleep)s that have been shooting the homeless have been contaminating the BB with feces first so that the entire wound channel will be infected. You might want to have your medics check the wound channel for signs of such an infection.
Also there probably isn't any ballistics evidence that can be gotten off the BBs

That is some scary stuff! I frequently ride to work and used to think my biggest fear was traffic. Thanks for posting this and all the best for a quick recovery!
Peter, Your news is horrifying. I'm so happy that you were not more seriously injured. It seems that your assailants have reached a new level of cruelty and stupidity. Hopefully jail is in their future. Can you remember any details about their vehicle? Like did they have a "We Still Squirrel Hunt" bumper sticker?
Seriously, I wish you the speediest of recoveries, both physical and mental. It sounds from the tone of your post that you are already way ahead of the rest of us.
I can't believe that stuff like that happens. It's encouraging to hear that you're so positive. Stay strong mate, and speedy recovery
thank you for your story peter - you are very brave. my best wishes for a quick recovery and more beautiful fall weather for you to enjoy your bike.
glad you're okay, from a portland cyclist. i hope your recovery is speedy, and i hope they catch the jerk who did this.
(interesting about the long lungs!)
Those of us who communte regularly all have stories. Despite the great health and mental benefits we do run the risk of being trauma from accidental and purposeful accidents. These liklihood of these incidents CAN be reduced by
-wider knowledge of cars of the rights of bicyclists;
-consistent obeyance of the laws by bicyclists;
-reacting to scary situations by taking the high ground of non-confrontational assertion of rights
-geneating a list of danger drivers from our first hand experiences.
Ive emailed Cascade a couple times intersted in promoting a couple efforts on these front and have had no reply. The ideas:
-initiate a on-line post of dangerous driving around cyclists.
-initiating an "its the law" T-shirt/jersey/tunic plan. Every six months print up a bunch of tunics that have a particular state law/ordinance that states our rights to the road.
Talk up these and other ideas. Take them to our organizations. We've been doing good work but clearly we cant stop now!
Peter-
Hope you are feeling better and recovering well. I got shot at in SF about fifteen years ago on my bike, but fortunately wasn't hit.
Fast wheels beneath you soon-
Craig
Oh my god....I am SO glad you ok
What a horrific incident
That is so awful. I grew up in Seattle and hate hearing stuff like that. I hope you recover and they find those pieces of turds soon.
Hey guy, hope all is well and nothing but good wishes for you and your fam. Get well soon.
A fellow bike commuter from Pittsburgh, PA
hi...I read about your incident last week and was horrified. I am a bicyclist as well and commute daily to/from work and live not too far from you in southpark.
You were also mentioned to me again yesterday afternoon when i was in the Harborview ER for, guess what; a deep-penetration pellet wound. You and I are BB-brothers apparently because I will have this one in my thigh, near the bone, for the rest of my life. Unlike you, however, I was not hit while riding, but while walking with my wife.
Otherwise my experience mirrors yours exactly what with the medics and the repetetive questions. I also had the added pleasure of answering all the questions again for the police. (I didn't know I could fit 10 people-including myself-in our tiny bathroom!!)
Anyway, my wife got into her car and tried to follow the perps (who had sped away laughing) but to no avail. (she was strongly chastised by the police for this and in hindsight, it was not a good idea) What we did get was a good look at the car; a late-model four-door red ford escort. I was wondering if you had seen the car of those who hit you? Oh, I also found out later that my neighbor's kid had been hit not 5 minutes prior to me...luckily no penetration. They did not report it until they saw the police cars outside my house.
I am very frustrated by the whole incident...first and foremost because i won't be able to ride until the pain subsides, but also because of the complete lack of empathy or understanding on the part of these people. I really want to find them and at least talk to them....maybe they don't realize the damage these things can cause. If i or my wife had been hit in the eye, we would surely have been blinded. Or if, as you mentioned, the spinal cord..I shudder to think of what could have happened!! As it was, there was a brief period in the E.R. when they couldn't find a pulse in my leg and were worried that an artery had been severed. (It turned out that I was just really cold from having all my clothes cut off of me in the ambulance.)
The police said they suspect it may have been the same people who got you.
Since my neighbor also postively identified the make/model/color of car, I asked the police if at the very least they would be checking the registry of all local late-model red ford escorts and to my surprise, though it would be very simple, they said they would not. The officer was very frank with me in telling me that one of two things would have to happen for more aggressive pursuit: 1) more people would have to get hit as you and i did or 2) the media would have to make a big to-do about it. (I guess they are strongly motivated by the possibility of looking bad.)
So in addition to my query as to what, if anything you saw, I'm wondering if you wanted to join forces and do something about it in terms of media? At this point I'm doubtful anyone would bite since it is, literally, yesterday's news. Also, I generally don't like the news-media and they way they cover and don't cover things, plus I know it would be a major pain in the ass for us, but I am worried about someone else getting hurt worse.

Good to hear you're recovering well. Get a second opinion on leaving those things in your body...I hope they capture those scumbags.
Peter-
I am glad you are OK. I hope they catch those guys. Just hang in there. It might take a while, but they will be caught.
-Sam-
Peter, glad you got the attention needed. While I do not commute I ride in the early evenings in the warmer months here in New England. The roads here are less safe with teens screaming as they pass, adults not wanting a cyclist on the road, and not better response from police that it seems is gotten anywhere else. Heal fast and stay safe.

I am just shocked. All the best for your recovery and hopefully happy riding soon.
Just one more rider stumbling over a link to your blog...
I hope you're doing OK!!!!! CRAZY story!
glad you are okay~!
that sucks!
people suck!
that person really really sucks!
Wow, such a scary story, and you tell it in such a matter of fact way! Don't let one act of mindless idiocy put you off from a lifetime of enjoyment from cycling (which from the matter of fact way that you tell your story i don't think it ever will!)
Livestrong :)
Peter, I got to this post from a link to a link to a link etc etc. What a story! Cheers sir! Takes a man to get shot, get back on the bike and keep going.

Hello Peter, I just read about what happened only a few hours ago. Found out about it while surfing the web about cycling and such. I hope justice will be done and for things like this to never happen. I've never been seriously injured while commuting by bike but I did have a teen aged boy stick a lacrosse stick out of a car window and hit me in the back while I was riding home from work, disturbing thing was I saw what looked like a parent in the driver's seat. People like that shouldn't even be allowed to have children.....
anyway hope all is going well and that you recover.
